Happy Friday Earthlings,
See, this is exactly why we’ve been stoked about the “underground” West Coast Hip Hop scene since 2005 (ala Stone’s Throw Records). This is not your “stereotypical” West Coast gangsta artist. Kendrick Lamar is bringin’ the lyrical ammunition and intellectual b-boy swagger that is reminiscent of Tribe Called Quest mixed w/ Talib Kweli & Lupe Fiasco (we know that’s a GRAND statement, but you will see). He reps Compton real hard, and after you see these videos, you’ll know …he’s the future. If you feel this, reach back into his mixtape and EP catalogue. The Kendrick Lamar EP (2009), Black Hippy’s “Overly Dedicated” (2010), and the latest mixtape out now, Section.80 (july 2011). He’s been endorsed by the Godfathers & Leaders of West Coast Hip Hop already (Snoop, Dre, Game). New School MCs..be on the lookout for dude…y’all been warned.
In August 2011, Lamar was onstage with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Game, the three of them crowned him the “New King of the West Coast”. This month (Oct 2011), Dr. Dre announced the signing of Kendrick Lamar to his label Aftermath Entertainment.
